WES ECA for Canada PR 2026: Complete Guide — Documents, Timeline & Common Mistakes

A World Education Services (WES) Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) is required for claiming education points in Express Entry. For most Indian applicants — B.Tech, M.Tech, MBA, B.Sc, BPT, B.Com graduates — WES is the most commonly used ECA provider. Getting the WES process right is critical because errors add 8–14 weeks of delay. This guide walks you through every step.

Step 1: Create Your WES Account

Go to wes.org/ca and create an account. Select 'Educational Credential Assessment for Immigration Purposes (ECA) — IRCC'. Pay the fee (approximately CAD $238 for a standard ECA + optional $105 for WES Advantage). You will receive a reference number that you'll give to your university.

Step 2: Documents Required from India

  • Official transcripts (marks sheets for all semesters) — sent DIRECTLY from your university in a sealed envelope with the registrar's signature/stamp across the seal
  • Degree certificate (original or attested copy) — some universities send this with the transcript; others require separate submission
  • Diploma/provisional certificate — required if your degree ceremony hasn't happened yet
  • Medium of instruction letter — required if your instruction was in English (most WES assessments for India require this)
  • Name change documents — if your name differs from your degree (marriage certificate, affidavit, gazette notification)

Step 3: How to Send Documents from Your University

This is where most applicants make mistakes. Documents must be sent DIRECTLY from your university's examination/registration department to WES — not through you. You cannot hand-carry them, scan them, or send them after opening the envelope. Contact your university registrar's office and request 'sealed transcripts for WES ECA' along with your WES reference number. Most Indian universities accept courier through DHL, FedEx, or India Post speed post.

Common WES Mistakes That Cause Delays

  • Sending documents yourself (not directly from university) — WES will reject and request resending
  • Unsealed envelope — envelope must be sealed by university and unopened by you
  • Missing medium of instruction letter — very common for Indian applicants
  • Wrong reference number on the envelope — university must write your WES reference number clearly
  • Submitting before paying — WES doesn't begin processing until payment is confirmed
  • Not checking WES portal status — documents may arrive but show 'missing' due to incomplete submission

Alternatives to WES for India

  • IQAS (International Qualifications Assessment Service) — Government of Alberta, free service, 22+ weeks processing
  • ICAS (International Credential Assessment Service) — 12–15 weeks, comparable to WES
  • NNAS (National Nursing Assessment Service) — specifically for nurses
  • PEBC (Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada) — for pharmacists only
  • MBBS/MD graduates: use NSOS (National Selective Credential Evaluation Service) or WES; licensing requires MCCQE

WES ECA Report — How It Adds to Your CRS

  • 4-year B.Tech/B.E. = Bachelor's degree (15 CRS education points + 25 skill transferability points if language CLB 7+)
  • 2-year M.Tech / MBA = Master's degree (23 CRS education points + 25 skill transferability points)
  • PhD = Doctoral degree (25 CRS education points + 25 skill transferability points)
  • If you have a 3-year degree (B.Sc, B.Com) PLUS a 2-year master's, you may qualify for a two or more credential bonus (25 additional CRS points)

The WES ECA is mandatory and non-negotiable for Express Entry. Get it started the moment you decide to apply — the 8–10 week wait is often the longest single delay in the entire process.
