IELTS vs PTE for Canada in 2026: Which Test Should You Take?

For most Indian students, the choice between IELTS and PTE comes down to two questions: Which test do I have a better chance of scoring well on? And which test is accepted where I need it? This guide answers both — for Canada study permits, university admissions, Express Entry, and Canadian PR.
Acceptance — IELTS vs PTE
IELTS Academic is accepted by virtually every Canadian university and college. PTE Academic is now accepted by most Canadian universities (check your specific institution). For the Canada study permit, both are accepted for the standard stream — but only IELTS qualifies for the faster Student Direct Stream (SDS). For Express Entry and Canadian PR, IELTS General Training and CELPIP are the standard options; PTE Core has been approved since 2023.
Score equivalence
A CLB 7 (Canadian Language Benchmark) — the benchmark for many study and immigration applications — corresponds to IELTS 6.0 in each band, or PTE Academic 50 in each category. A CLB 9 (required for high CRS points) corresponds to IELTS 7.0 or PTE 65. When comparing scores, always use the official CLB conversion chart from IRCC rather than general comparisons.
Format comparison
- IELTS Academic: 4 sections (Listening 40 min, Reading 60 min, Writing 60 min, Speaking 11–14 min with examiner). Total ~2 hr 45 min. Human-graded writing and speaking.
- PTE Academic: Computer-based, integrated tasks, approximately 2 hours. All AI-graded — no human examiner interaction. Speaking done into microphone.
Which is harder?
The honest answer is that it depends on the student. PTE Academic tends to be more test-strategy-friendly — the AI grading rewards specific patterns (content words in Summarise Written Text, fluency markers in Speaking). Many Indian students find PTE Speaking less stressful because there is no face-to-face examiner. However, IELTS Reading is often considered more straightforward than PTE Reading's complex integrated tasks. If you are nervous about speaking to examiners, try PTE first. If you prefer clear, section-by-section tasks, IELTS may suit you better.
Cost and availability
IELTS costs approximately ₹16,250–₹17,000 in India. PTE Academic costs approximately ₹15,900 (varies by centre). Both are available in major Indian cities including Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Surat, Pune, Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, and others. PTE tends to have more available slots and earlier test dates in most cities. Results are faster with PTE (48–72 hours vs. 3–5 days for IELTS).
For the SDS stream — IELTS only
If you plan to apply for Canada's Student Direct Stream (for faster 20-day processing), you must use IELTS. The SDS requires an IELTS score of 6.0 or higher in all four bands. PTE Academic is not accepted for SDS. Given the time savings of SDS processing, students who meet the criteria are strongly advised to take IELTS, even if PTE would otherwise be their preferred option.
Our recommendation
- Taking SDS route → Take IELTS (mandatory)
- Nervous about face-to-face speaking → Consider PTE first
- Applying to universities in a hurry → PTE (results in 48 hrs)
- Best CRS points for Express Entry → IELTS General Training (widely proven, high benchmark scores achievable)
Most of our successful Canada-bound students take a mock test for both IELTS and PTE before committing — the format that feels natural usually produces the best score.
