How to Get a Canada Study Permit in 2026: Step-by-Step Guide for Indian Students

Canada remains the top destination for Indian students — over 427,000 Indian students studied in Canada in 2023, and the numbers keep growing. The study permit is the cornerstone of that journey. This guide walks you through every step of the 2026 application process, from choosing your school to landing at the airport.
Who needs a Canada study permit?
You need a study permit if your program is longer than 6 months. Short language courses or summer programs under 6 months do not require a permit, but most degree and diploma programs do. As an Indian citizen, you also need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) — this is issued along with your study permit automatically.
Step 1 — Get your Letter of Acceptance (LOA)
You cannot apply for a study permit without a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). All universities and most colleges in Canada are DLIs — verify using IRCC's official DLI list before applying to any school. The LOA must state your DLI number, program name, start date, and duration.
Step 2 — Gather your documents
- Valid passport (must cover the entire duration of your study + 6 months)
- Letter of Acceptance from a DLI
- Proof of financial support (GIC of CAD 20,635 + first year tuition)
- IELTS/PTE/TOEFL score report meeting your school's requirements
- Statement of Purpose (SOP) explaining why you chose Canada and this program
- Academic transcripts and certificates (Class 10, 12, degree if applicable)
- Medical exam by a Panel Physician if required (check IRCC website)
- Biometrics (fingerprints + photo at a CVAC or VAC centre in India)
- Proof of ties to India (family, property, future employment plans)
- Photographs meeting IRCC specifications
Step 3 — Financial proof requirements
Canada's visa officers look for genuine financial capacity. The minimum required is tuition for Year 1 plus CAD 10,000 for living expenses (CAD 11,000 for Quebec). The GIC of CAD 20,635 covers the living expenses portion. However, to be safe, show 20–30% more than the minimum — bank statements showing consistent savings over 6–12 months carry more weight than a sudden large deposit.
Step 4 — The SDS (Student Direct Stream)
Indian students who meet the following criteria qualify for the faster SDS stream, which typically processes in 20 calendar days instead of the standard 4–8 weeks:
- IELTS score of at least 6.0 in each band (no band below 6.0)
- GIC of CAD 20,635 from a participating financial institution
- Acceptance from a DLI
- Upfront medical exam completed
- No family members accompanying (or with their own permits)
Step 5 — Submit your application
Apply online through your IRCC secure account at ircc.canada.ca. Create an account, select 'Study Permit', and follow the wizard. You'll pay the application fee (CAD 150) plus biometrics fee (CAD 85) online. After submission, if biometrics are requested, you'll receive a Biometric Collection Notice — visit a CVAC in Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, or Kolkata within 30 days.
Step 6 — After approval — Port of Entry (POE)
When your study permit is approved, you receive an Approval Letter (and TRV sticker in your passport if applicable). Your actual study permit document is issued at the Canadian port of entry — keep your LOA, passport, financial proof, and approval letter in your carry-on. The border officer may ask about your study plans, financial situation, and intent to return to India after studies — answer confidently and truthfully.
Top reasons for study permit rejection
- Weak ties to India — visa officers must believe you will return home after studies
- Insufficient funds — showing exact minimum with no buffer raises red flags
- Poor SOP — generic statements without clear connection to career goals in India
- Program-qualification mismatch — choosing a field unrelated to your background
- Incomplete documents or inconsistencies between documents
A Canada study permit refusal is not the end — understanding the refusal reason and reapplying with a stronger file has a high success rate when done correctly.
