How to Choose a Genuine Immigration Consultant in India: Avoid Scams in 2026

Immigration fraud targeting Indian applicants is rampant. Fake consultants promise guaranteed visas, collect fees of โ‚น2โ€“10 lakhs, submit fraudulent documents or ghost-applications, and disappear. In 2024, thousands of Indian immigration applications were rejected or flagged by IRCC due to unauthorized representative fraud. Knowing how to choose a genuine consultant is as important as knowing how to apply.

For Canada immigration โ€” only RCICs or lawyers

For Canadian immigration, only three categories of professionals are legally authorized to represent clients before IRCC: Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCICs), Canadian lawyers and paralegals (licensed in a Canadian province or territory), and Quebec notaries. Anyone else โ€” regardless of how they present themselves, what certificates they show, or what results they claim โ€” is operating illegally and putting your application at risk.

How to verify an RCIC in 30 seconds

Go to www.college-ic.ca and click 'Find a Member'. Search by name or RCIC number. A legitimate RCIC will appear in the public register with their registration status, authorized to practice, and any disciplinary history. If someone claims to be an RCIC but does not appear in this register โ€” or their registration is suspended or revoked โ€” do not hire them, regardless of their claimed experience or results.

For study abroad โ€” look for AIRC recognition and university partnerships

For study abroad consultants, check for AIRC (American International Recruitment Council) recognition โ€” AIRC-certified agencies in India have been vetted against ethical standards and genuine university partnerships. University-authorized representatives are listed on official university websites in their 'international agents' sections โ€” verify your consultant appears there for the universities they claim to represent.

10 red flags of a fraudulent consultant

  • 1. Guaranteed visa approval โ€” no one can guarantee a visa decision
  • 2. Large upfront cash payment without a formal service agreement
  • 3. Unable or unwilling to show RCIC registration or AIRC certification
  • 4. Claims of 'special contacts' at embassies, IRCC, or universities
  • 5. Asking you to sign blank forms or date-blank documents
  • 6. No written contract or fee structure
  • 7. Asks you to submit fraudulent financial documents or fake employment letters
  • 8. Pressure to apply immediately without explaining the process
  • 9. No physical office address or only operates via WhatsApp/phone
  • 10. Fees significantly below market rate (often a sign they will cut corners or disappear)

What a genuine consultant provides

  • Written service agreement specifying services, fees, timelines, and refund policy
  • RCIC registration number on all correspondence (for Canada immigration)
  • Honest assessment of your eligibility โ€” including difficult truths about refusal risks
  • Clear explanation of the entire process before taking any fees
  • Regular status updates and direct access to the consultant handling your case
  • Documented record of your application and all submitted documents

Future Link Consultants holds RCIC authorization for Canadian immigration and AIRC recognition since 2013 for study abroad. We display our registration numbers on every piece of communication. If a consultant refuses to do the same, walk away.
