Canada vs Australia PR in 2026: Which Is Easier for Indian Professionals?

Canada and Australia are the two most popular PR destinations for Indian professionals, and both have world-class points-based immigration systems. But they are different in important ways. This comparison covers everything Indian applicants need to know to choose the right path in 2026.
Points system — how they compare
Canada uses the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) — a dynamic points system where your score depends on age, education, English/French proficiency, work experience, and bonus factors (spouse education, job offer, provincial nomination, Canadian study/work). CRS scores fluctuate based on pool composition, and receiving an ITA depends on how you rank against other candidates at each draw. Australia uses a static 100-point test where you know exactly how many points you have. The minimum is 65; invitations typically go to 85–100+ for 189 and 75–85 for 190.
Occupation coverage
Australia's MLTSSL and STSOL occupation lists are structured and publicly updated. If your occupation is not on the list, you cannot apply for the 189/190. Canada's Express Entry has no occupation restrictions for the Federal Skilled Worker program — you can apply from almost any NOC TEER 0/1/2/3 occupation. For healthcare workers, trades, and niche professions not on Australia's skilled lists, Canada is often the more accessible route.
Language requirements
Canada requires CLB 7 as a minimum for Federal Skilled Worker (IELTS 6.0 each band). Higher scores give more CRS points. Australia requires Competent English (IELTS 6.0 each band) as the minimum, but Proficient (7.0) and Superior (8.0) English each add 10 more points to your skilled visa score — making high English scores highly rewarded in both systems.
Salary comparison
- Software Engineer: Canada CAD 90,000–120,000 ($65–90K USD) vs Australia AUD 100,000–140,000 ($65–90K USD) — comparable
- Registered Nurse: Canada CAD 65,000–85,000 vs Australia AUD 70,000–95,000 — Australia slightly higher
- Civil Engineer: Canada CAD 75,000–100,000 vs Australia AUD 85,000–115,000 — Australia higher
- Accountant/CPA: Canada CAD 65,000–95,000 vs Australia AUD 75,000–100,000 — comparable
- Note: Australia has no provincial income tax equivalent burden — federal + state taxes are broadly similar to Canada's federal + provincial structure
Cost of living
Sydney and Melbourne are comparable to Toronto in cost of living. Perth, Brisbane, and Adelaide are significantly cheaper. Canadian cities: Vancouver and Toronto are Canada's most expensive; Calgary and Edmonton are significantly cheaper. In both countries, choosing a second-tier city saves substantially on living costs while maintaining strong job markets.
Indian community
Canada has 1.8 million+ Indian-origin residents — the largest per capita Indian diaspora outside India. Australia has 800,000+ Indian-origin residents, concentrated in Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth. Both countries have extensive Indian grocery stores, temples, cultural events, and community organizations. Canada's larger Indian community means more job networks and community support, particularly for new arrivals.
Our verdict — which is right for you?
- Choose Canada if: you have Canadian study or work experience, your occupation has a dedicated Express Entry category draw, or you score poorly on Australia's age scale (over 33)
- Choose Australia if: your occupation is on the MLTSSL, you have high English scores (8.0+), you prefer a transparent points system, or you want regional opportunities with lower competition
- Consider both in parallel: many of our clients submit EOIs for Australia while pursuing Canadian PR — the timelines often align to get whichever comes first
Running Canada and Australia immigration in parallel is the smartest strategy for most Indian professionals — whichever country extends an invitation first wins, and you have not wasted any preparation.
