Canada Spousal Sponsorship from India 2026: Process, Timeline & Documents

Spousal sponsorship is one of the most emotionally important immigration pathways — reuniting families separated by international borders. Canada places spousal and partner reunification as a priority immigration category. This guide explains everything Indian couples need to know about spousal sponsorship in 2026 — whether the sponsor is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

Who Can Be Sponsored?

  • Legally married spouse (marriage must be legally recognised in both Canada and the country of marriage)
  • Common-law partner (cohabited continuously for at least 12 months in a genuine relationship)
  • Conjugal partner (lived apart for compelling reasons but in a committed relationship for 12+ months)
  • Dependent children of the spouse (under 22, not married/common-law)

Outland vs. Inland Sponsorship

Outland sponsorship: The sponsored spouse remains in India (or their home country) throughout the process and receives a permanent resident visa to enter Canada. This is the standard route for couples where the spouse has never entered Canada or returned to India. Inland sponsorship: The sponsored spouse is already in Canada on a valid status (visitor, student, or work visa). They apply for PR while staying in Canada and can receive an open work permit while waiting. Inland is faster in practice but requires the spouse to maintain valid status in Canada throughout.

Financial Requirements for the Sponsor

  • No minimum income requirement for spousal/partner sponsorship (unlike parent sponsorship)
  • Sponsor must not be receiving social assistance (unless it's disability-related)
  • Sponsor must sign an undertaking to financially support the sponsored spouse for 3 years
  • Sponsor must not have had previous sponsored spouses who became social assistance recipients
  • Sponsor must not have sponsored and been convicted of certain offences

Key Documents Required

  • Marriage certificate (civil registration, not just a religious ceremony certificate) — notarised and translated
  • Wedding photos — Canadian officers do review these for relationship genuineness
  • Proof of relationship history: chat logs, call records, travel stamps, joint bank accounts, cards
  • Evidence of cohabitation or regular visits: flight tickets, hotel bookings, shared utility bills
  • Sponsor's Canadian PR card, citizenship certificate, or passport
  • Sponsor's tax notices of assessment (NOA) from last 3 years
  • Sponsored spouse's passport, photos, police clearance certificate, medical exam

Relationship Genuineness — What IRCC Looks For

IRCC officers are trained to identify marriages of convenience. They look at: how the couple met, how the relationship developed, how often they communicate, whether families are aware of the relationship, and whether the relationship is consistent with the couple's cultural backgrounds. A detailed and honest relationship narrative, supported by evidence, is essential. Couples with arranged marriages may need to explain how a genuine relationship developed after the arrangement.

Spousal sponsorship refusals almost always come down to insufficient relationship evidence or inconsistent answers in the application. We help our couples build a complete, consistent narrative that reflects their genuine relationship.
