Canada Family Sponsorship 2026: How to Bring Parents, Spouse & Children to Canada

Canada's family reunification program is one of its most valued immigration features. Once you become a Canadian PR or citizen, bringing your closest family members is a right, not a privilege. Here is the comprehensive guide to every family sponsorship option available in 2026.
Spousal and common-law partner sponsorship
This is the most common and fastest family reunification option. Canadian PRs or citizens can sponsor their spouse, common-law partner (lived together for 12+ months), or conjugal partner (unable to live together for immigration reasons). The sponsored partner receives Permanent Residency — not a temporary visa. Processing timeline: 8–18 months depending on whether the couple is inside or outside Canada. The sponsor must sign an undertaking to financially support the sponsored person for 3 years after PR.
In-Canada vs Outland sponsorship
In-Canada sponsorship (both sponsor and sponsored are in Canada): faster processing (8–12 months), but the sponsored spouse must have a valid status in Canada. Outland sponsorship (sponsored spouse is abroad): 12–18 months, but the sponsored spouse can continue living in India during processing. Most Indian families choose outland sponsorship as it does not require the spouse to obtain a temporary visa to enter Canada while waiting.
Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)
The PGP allows Canadian PRs and citizens to sponsor parents and grandparents for permanent residency. IRCC opens an online interest to sponsor form annually — typically in January. The number of available spots is limited (20,000–30,000 per year) and randomly selected. Selected candidates are invited to apply and must meet income requirements (100% of LICO for the 3 years prior to application). Processing after invitation: 24–36 months.
Super Visa — the smart alternative for parents
The Super Visa is a multiple-entry visitor visa allowing parents and grandparents of Canadian PRs or citizens to stay in Canada for up to 5 years per entry. The Super Visa is valid for 10 years or until passport expiry. Requirements: proof of relationship, proof of financial support from the sponsor (meeting LICO), Canadian medical insurance covering the parent for at least 1 year (minimum $100,000 CAD coverage), and a medical exam. Processing takes 4–8 weeks — much faster than PR sponsorship.
Sponsoring children
Dependent children (under 22 years old, or over 22 if dependent due to disability) can be sponsored as part of the sponsor's PR application or separately. Orphaned siblings, brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, and grandchildren under 18 can also be sponsored if they have no surviving parents. The processing time for dependent children is typically 8–12 months.
Family sponsorship is one of Canada's greatest gifts to immigrants. We guide clients through the paperwork thoroughly — a single mistake in the undertaking documents or relationship proof can add 6–12 months to an already long wait.
