Admission vs Visa — Key Distinction

A university may waive IELTS for admission (MOI letter, Duolingo), but the UK Home Office still requires a UKVI-approved English test for the student visa. Indian students must pass IELTS (UKVI), PTE Academic (UKVI), or another UKVI-approved test to obtain a Tier 4 visa — regardless of the university's English waiver.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Indian students study in the UK without IELTS?

Yes — many UK universities accept alternatives to IELTS. If you studied in English-medium schooling for 12+ years (standard in India), a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter from your institution is often sufficient for undergraduate or postgraduate admission.

What is a Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter and does it work for UK universities?

A MOI letter is an official document from your school/college stating that your education was delivered in English. Many UK universities including Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, and Edinburgh accept MOI letters from Indian applicants as proof of English proficiency.

Which English tests does UK UKVI accept besides IELTS?

For the UK Student visa (Tier 4), UKVI-approved tests include IELTS Academic (UKVI), PTE Academic (UKVI), Trinity ISE, and LanguageCert Academic. Not all general IELTS scores qualify — the test must be the UKVI version.

Do Russell Group universities accept PTE instead of IELTS?

Yes — virtually all Russell Group universities accept PTE Academic as an equivalent to IELTS. UCL, King's College, Edinburgh, Manchester, and others all accept PTE with equivalent score bands (e.g., PTE 62 ≈ IELTS 7.0).

Can I use Duolingo English Test for UK universities?

Some UK universities accept Duolingo (DET) but it is NOT accepted by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for the student visa. You would still need a UKVI-approved test after receiving admission. Best to confirm with your specific university.

Which universities in UK accept MOI letters from Indian students?

Universities known to accept MOI letters from Indian English-medium graduates include University of Birmingham, Cardiff University, University of Exeter, University of Bath, Aston University, and many post-92 universities. Policies change — always confirm with admissions.

Is IELTS required for the UK student visa even if the university waives it?

Yes — even if the university accepts a MOI letter for admission, the UK Home Office requires a UKVI-approved English test for the student visa (Tier 4) unless you are a national of a majority English-speaking country. Indian nationals must provide UKVI test results for the visa.
