The F-1 visa requires specific documents and pre-payments. Here is what every Indian student must have before applying.

SEVIS I-901 Fee โ€” $350

Pay the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) fee of $350 at FMJfee.com using your SEVIS ID printed on your I-20. Keep the receipt safe for the interview.

Application Process

Step-by-Step F-1 Visa Process

Follow these seven steps in order to ensure a smooth and successful US student visa application from India.

01

Receive US University Admission & I-20

Apply to SEVP-certified US universities and secure your admission letter. Request Form I-20 from the Designated School Official (DSO). This document is the foundation of your F-1 visa application.

02

Pay SEVIS I-901 Fee ($350)

Log on to FMJfee.com, enter your SEVIS ID from the I-20, and pay the mandatory $350 SEVIS fee. You must pay at least 3 business days before your visa interview. Download and print the payment confirmation.

03

Complete DS-160 Application Form

Fill the DS-160 Nonimmigrant Visa Application form at ceac.state.gov. Answer all questions carefully, upload a US visa-compliant photograph, and save the confirmation page with the barcode.

04

Pay MRV Visa Application Fee

Pay the Machine Readable Visa (MRV) fee of $185 through the designated bank or online portal for the US Embassy India. Keep the receipt โ€” you will need it to book your interview appointment.

05

Schedule Visa Interview Appointment

Create a profile on the US Visa Appointment Service (USVISA-INFO) website, enter your MRV receipt number and DS-160 barcode, and book your F-1 interview slot at your preferred US Consulate in India.

06

Prepare & Attend the Visa Interview

Carry all original documents to the US Consulate. Be prepared to answer questions about your chosen university, program, career goals, financial support, and ties to India. Dress formally and be concise.

07

Visa Approval & Passport Collection

After a successful interview, your passport is retained for visa stamping. Collection is typically within 3โ€“5 working days via courier or in-person. Your F-1 visa will show entry date and duration of status (D/S).
