F-1 visa process — 6 steps for Indian students

US visa interview slots from India book out 3–4 months early. Start this process the day you receive your I-20.

01
Get accepted at a SEVP-approved US school

Apply and receive an acceptance from a university registered with SEVP (Student and Exchange Visitor Program). Your school's international office will issue a Form I-20 — the document that authorises your F-1 visa application.

02
Pay the SEVIS fee (USD 350)

Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee online at fmjfee.com before your visa interview. USD 350 for F-1 students. Keep the payment receipt — you must present it at your visa interview. SEVIS ID is printed on your I-20.

03
Complete DS-160 online application

Fill out the Non-immigrant Visa Application (DS-160) at ceac.state.gov. Take care with your purpose of travel and financial details — inconsistencies with your I-20 or bank statements are a common reason for refusals.

04
Book US visa interview at VFS/AIS

Schedule your F-1 interview at the nearest US Consulate (Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, New Delhi, Kolkata) through the US Embassy appointment system. Pay the MRV fee of USD 185 (~₹15,500). Slots in India are heavily booked — apply 4–5 months early.

05
Attend visa interview

Bring I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS receipt, MRV payment receipt, passport, financial documents, IELTS/TOEFL scores, and admission letter. The interview is short (2–5 minutes) — officers assess genuine student intent and financial ability. Future Link runs mock interviews.

06
Receive F-1 visa & register at SEVIS

If approved, your passport is returned with the F-1 visa stamp (usually within 5 business days). You can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date. Register with your school's DSO within the first few days.
