What the Skilled Worker Visa Is

The UK Skilled Worker visa lets you work in the UK for an approved employer in an eligible job that meets the required skill and salary levels. For many Indian students, it is the natural next step after graduating โ€” a way to convert the Graduate Route into a longer-term, settlement-track visa.

Unlike the Graduate Route, the Skilled Worker visa needs a job offer from a licensed sponsor. In return, it offers a genuine path toward settlement (indefinite leave to remain) and the option to bring eligible dependants. Rules, thresholds, and eligible occupations change often, so confirm the current requirements before you plan.

Key Requirements at a Glance

RequirementWhat it means
Licensed sponsorA job offer from a UK employer holding a valid sponsor licence
Certificate of SponsorshipThe employer issues a CoS for your specific role

English languageProve English at the required level, often via an approved test
Maintenance fundsShow you can support yourself unless your sponsor certifies this

Salary thresholds, going rates, and eligible occupation lists change frequently โ€” always check the current UK government rules before applying.

From Graduate Route to Settlement

Many students first use the Graduate Route to gain UK work experience, then switch to the Skilled Worker visa once they secure a sponsored role. Note that time on the Graduate Route does not count toward settlement, whereas time on the Skilled Worker visa generally does.

After a continuous qualifying period on eligible work visas, Skilled Worker holders can usually apply for indefinite leave to remain, subject to meeting all conditions at the time. This is why moving onto the Skilled Worker route early can matter for long-term plans.

The Graduate Route is time-limited and does not count toward settlement, so treat it as a window to find a sponsored role. Requirements and salary thresholds change often โ€” verify the latest rules and confirm your employer holds a valid sponsor licence before relying on any offer.
