Germany at a Glance for Indian Students
Before you begin your application journey, here are the six pillars every Indian applicant must understand.
Free Public Universities
Most German public universities charge zero tuition. Indian students pay only €300–500 per semester as administrative fees — one of the best-value destinations on earth.
APS Certificate — Mandatory
Indian applicants must obtain the Akademische Prüfstelle (APS) certificate verifying academic credentials before applying for a student visa. Processing takes 4–8 weeks.
Blocked Account €11,208
A blocked account (Sperrkonto) of €11,208 per year must be opened and funded to prove financial sufficiency — a non-negotiable visa requirement for Indian students.
DAAD Scholarships
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers fully-funded scholarships specifically for Indian students covering tuition, living expenses, and travel allowances.
120 Days Work Per Year
Indian students on a German student visa can work up to 120 full days (or 240 half days) per year part-time, helping offset living costs during studies.
18-Month Job Seeker Visa
After graduation, Indian students can stay in Germany for up to 18 months on a job-seeker visa to find employment commensurate with their qualification.
Important for Indian Students
The APS certificate is exclusive to applicants from India, China, and Vietnam. It is not optional — the German Embassy will not process your student visa without it. Begin your APS application at least 3 months before your planned visa appointment.
How to Study in Germany from India
Eight clearly defined steps — from the first research call to your first day on campus in Germany.
Research & University Shortlisting
Identify German public universities and degree programmes (taught in English or German) aligned with your academic background, career goals, and language proficiency. Check course-specific intake deadlines — winter semester (October) and summer semester (April).
Language Preparation
Secure IELTS/TOEFL for English-taught programmes or DSH/TestDaF for German-taught ones. Most master's in English require IELTS 6.5+. German language courses (B1/B2) at Goethe Institut are strongly recommended regardless.
APS Certificate Application
Apply to the APS India office in New Delhi with originals of all mark sheets, degree certificates, and passport. Attend the mandatory interview (conducted in German or English). Receive your APS certificate in 4–8 weeks — this is compulsory for all Indian students.
University Application
Apply directly to universities or via uni-assist (the central application portal used by most German institutions). Submit academic transcripts, SOP, LORs, CV, language scores, and APS certificate. Application portals open 6–9 months before intake.
Open Blocked Account & Arrange Finances
Once you have a conditional or unconditional offer, open a blocked account (Sperrkonto) with providers like Coracle, Fintiba, or Deutsche Bank and deposit €11,208. This funds monthly releases of €934 after arrival.
German Student Visa Application
Book a visa appointment at the German Embassy/Consulate in India (Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata). Submit the complete dossier: university admission letter, APS certificate, blocked account proof, health insurance, accommodation letter, and financial documents.
Pre-Departure & Arrival
Arrange student health insurance (TK, AOK, or Barmer), book initial accommodation (student hostels or WG flats), attend pre-departure orientation, and register at the local residents' office (Einwohnermeldeamt) within 14 days of arrival.
Enrolment & Semester Registration
Complete university enrolment, pay the semester contribution (€300–500), obtain your student ID, and set up a German bank account (N26 or Sparkasse). You are now officially a student in Germany.
