Why Indian Students Choose Canada for Higher Education
Canada consistently ranks as the #1 study-abroad destination for Indian students — and for very good reason. Unlike the US or UK, Canada offers not just world-class education but a genuine, well-defined pathway to permanent residency. Every year, over 500,000 Indian students study in Canada, making Indians the largest international student group in the country.
The combination of affordable tuition (compared to the US and UK), strong employment outcomes, a large and welcoming Gujarati and Indian community, and the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program makes Canada uniquely attractive. Students who study and then work in Canada accumulate Canadian Work Experience — the single biggest CRS booster in Express Entry — creating a study-to-PR pipeline that the US and UK simply do not offer.
World-Class Universities
University of Toronto, UBC, McGill, McMaster, Waterloo — globally ranked across engineering, business, CS, health sciences, and social sciences.
PGWP Up to 3 Years
Graduate from a Canadian DLI and get a 1–3 year open work permit. Work anywhere in Canada, gain CRS points, and apply for PR.
Fastest PR Route
Canadian Work Experience adds up to 80 CRS points in Express Entry. Most Indian students who study here get PR within 2–3 years of graduating.
Strong Indian Community
Canada has 1.8 million Indians — the largest South Asian diaspora. Gujarati communities in Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga, and Surrey are well-established.
Affordable vs US/UK
International tuition at Canadian colleges starts from CAD 15,000/yr vs USD 35,000+ in the US. Atlantic provinces (Halifax, Fredericton) are even more affordable.
Co-op & Work Rights
Study permit holders can work 24 hrs/week off-campus. Many universities offer co-op programs with paid internships embedded in the degree.
Canada Study Permit Process for Indian Students
Step-by-step guide from application to landing in Canada
Choose Your Institution & Program
Select a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) — all public universities and most private colleges are DLIs. Choose a program aligned with your career goals and the Canadian labour market. We help shortlist 3–5 options matching your grades, IELTS score, and budget.
Apply and Receive Your LOA
Submit your application with transcripts, SOP, LOR, and IELTS scores. Processing time: 2–6 weeks for most institutions. Once accepted, you receive a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) — the most critical document for your study permit.
Apply for Canada Study Permit
Apply online through the IRCC portal with your LOA, financial proof (CAD 20,000–25,000 in bank statements + first year tuition), SOP, passport, and police clearance. Under SDS (Student Direct Stream), add IELTS 6.0+, full first-year tuition payment, and a GIC certificate. SDS processing: 20 days. Regular: 4–12 weeks.
Biometrics at VAC in India
After submitting your online application, you'll be asked to provide biometrics (photo + fingerprints) at a Visa Application Centre. VACs are available in Vadodara (BLS International), Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, and 11 other Indian cities.
Receive Study Permit & Fly to Canada
Your study permit is issued as an eTA + Port of Entry letter. You must carry your LOA, proof of funds, and academic documents when entering Canada. Your study permit will be stamped at the Canadian port of entry.
Graduate → PGWP → PR
Graduate from your Canadian DLI program (minimum 8 months) → Apply for PGWP (1–3 years) → Work in Canada → Build Canadian Work Experience CRS points → Apply for Express Entry PR. This pipeline is the most common route Indians use to achieve Canada PR.
