About the Visa

Built to keep families together

Germany's Family Reunification Visa (Familiennachzug) under §§27–36 of the Residence Act lets spouses and minor children join an EU Blue Card, Skilled Worker (§18a/b), Researcher, or settlement permit holder.

Spouses generally need basic German (A1 Goethe certificate) — waived for EU Blue Card and Skilled Worker spouses. Once granted, the spouse gets full unrestricted work rights from day one.

Eligibility

Who qualifies for Germany?

  • Main applicant holds EU Blue Card, Skilled Worker permit (§18a/b), Researcher (§18d), or Niederlassungserlaubnis
  • A1 German certificate for spouse (waived for Blue Card / Skilled Worker spouses)
  • Sufficient living space (at least 12 m²/adult)
  • Sponsor's income covers family without state benefits
  • Health insurance for entire family
  • Marriage recognised under German law
