UK Student Visa 2026: Complete Documents Checklist for Indian Students

The UK remains the second most popular study abroad destination for Indian students, with over 185,000 Indian students studying in the UK in 2024. The Student Visa process is rigorous but straightforward if you have the right documents. Here is the complete 2026 checklist.

Step 1 — Pre-application requirements

• Unconditional offer letter from a UK Higher Education Provider (HEP) licensed by UKVI
• CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) reference number from your university
• Valid passport — must be valid for the duration of your studies plus 6 months
• UK IELTS for UKVI score report (must be specifically IELTS UKVI version, not standard IELTS Academic)

Step 2 — Financial documents

• Bank statements showing funds for 28 consecutive days before application date
• Required amount: First year tuition (from CAS) + £1,334/month × 9 for London, or £1,023/month × 9 for other cities
• If funds are in parents' account: parental relationship proof (birth certificate) + bank statements
• Education loan sanction letter if applicable
• Scholarship letter if applicable (may reduce financial requirement)
• No sudden large deposits — consistent balance showing genuine savings

Step 3 — Health and character documents

• TB test certificate from UKBA-approved clinic in India (required for courses over 6 months)
• Academic Consent form for students under 18 (if applicable)
• Criminal conviction declaration if applicable

Step 4 — Academic documents

• Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and certificates
• Bachelor's degree transcripts and provisional/final certificate (if applicable)
• Academic gap explanation letter if there is a break between qualifications
• Work experience letters (if work experience is part of the offer condition or application)

Step 5 — Application process

Apply online at gov.uk/student-visa. Create a UKVI account, complete the form, pay the visa fee (£490 for Student Visa) and Immigration Health Surcharge (£776/year), then book a biometric appointment at a UKVCAS centre in India (Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Pune). Bring your passport and all original documents to the biometric appointment.

IELTS UKVI — important note

Unlike standard IELTS Academic (which is for university admission), the UK Student Visa requires IELTS for UKVI — a specific variant of the test approved by the UK Home Office. The test content and scoring are identical to standard IELTS Academic, but it must be taken at specific test centres and booked through a specific system. Confirm with your test centre that you are booking IELTS for UKVI, not standard IELTS Academic.

The 28-day fund rule trips up more applications than any other requirement. Ensure your full required balance is in the bank account 28 days before you submit the visa application — not the biometrics appointment, the actual submission date.
