How to Get UK Permanent Residency (ILR) After Studying or Working: 2026 Guide for Indians

UK Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) is the British equivalent of permanent residency — it gives you the right to live, work, and study in the UK without immigration restrictions. For Indian students and professionals, achieving ILR is a long game: typically 7–10 years after first arriving in the UK. But with the right strategy, it is absolutely achievable. Here is the roadmap.

The student-to-ILR pathway

The most common route for Indian students: Study in UK (3–4 years on Student visa, does NOT count toward ILR) → Switch to Graduate Route visa (2 years, counts toward ILR) → Find a qualifying employer and switch to Skilled Worker visa → Work for 3 more years (to reach 5 years total on work visas) → Apply for ILR. This is typically a 8–9 year total journey from arriving as a student.

The Skilled Worker visa pathway (without prior UK study)

If you arrive on a Skilled Worker visa directly from India, you need 5 continuous years on the visa with the same or different qualifying employers to apply for ILR. Salary thresholds must be maintained throughout (the going rate for your Standard Occupational Classification code or the general threshold — whichever is higher). Absences from the UK cannot exceed 180 days in any 12-month period of the qualifying period.

ILR requirements — the checklist

  • 5 years continuous lawful residence in UK (on qualifying visa categories)
  • No more than 180 days absent from UK in any 12-month period
  • Pass the Life in the UK test (multiple choice, 45 min, covers British history and values)
  • English language requirement: B1 level (typically waived for UK degree holders)
  • No criminal convictions or immigration violations
  • Salary above the applicable threshold throughout qualifying period (for Skilled Worker route)

Global Talent visa — the fast track

The Global Talent visa is available to recognized leaders and exceptional talents in digital technology, science/engineering, arts, and academia. Endorsement comes from bodies like Tech Nation (digital tech), the Royal Society (sciences), or the British Academy (humanities). If endorsed, you can apply for ILR after just 3 years (instead of 5) and there is no employer tie requirement. Indian IT professionals, researchers, and creative professionals with strong track records should investigate this route.

After ILR — British citizenship

Once you hold ILR, you can apply for British citizenship after 12 months. British citizenship gives you a British passport (one of the world's most powerful, with 190+ visa-free destinations), the right to vote, and full permanent rights in the UK for life. The citizenship application involves the same Life in the UK test (if not already passed) and a nationality ceremony.

ILR is a marathon, not a sprint — but every year in the UK builds toward it. The students who plan their visa switches carefully from Day 1 reach ILR years faster than those who navigate it reactively.
