Germany Student Visa Checklist 2026: Complete Documents Guide for Indian Students

Germany is the most cost-effective study abroad destination for Indian students — but its visa application is meticulous and sequential. Every document must be in order, and the process must be started 6–8 months before your course begins. Here is the complete step-by-step checklist for 2026.

Stage 1 — University admission (before visa)

  • APS certificate from APS India (mandatory — 4–8 weeks to obtain)
  • Admission letter (Zulassungsbescheid) or conditional admission from a German university
  • For English programs: IELTS/TOEFL/PTE score meeting the university requirement
  • For German programs: TestDaF level 4 or DSH-2 certificate
  • Completed Uni-Assist application (for universities using this platform) or direct university application

Stage 2 — Financial proof (required for visa)

  • Blocked account (Sperrkonto) with €11,208 for 2026 — from Fintiba, Coracle, Expatrio, or Deutsche Bank
  • Blocked account confirmation certificate showing the full amount deposited
  • If not using blocked account: formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung) from a German sponsor
  • Bank statements supporting the source of blocked account funds

Stage 3 — Health insurance

  • Health insurance confirmation for Germany (travel health insurance valid until enrollment in German statutory insurance)
  • Once enrolled in a German university, you must join a German statutory health insurance scheme (TK, AOK, DAK) at ~€120/month
  • Incoming health insurance from providers like Care Concept or Mawista is commonly used for the visa application stage

Stage 4 — Visa application documents

  • Valid passport (minimum 12 months validity beyond intended stay)
  • Two passport-size photographs per German specifications
  • Completed National Visa Type D application form (available online or at German Embassy)
  • Motivation letter explaining your study purpose, choice of program, and post-study plans
  • Academic transcripts (Class 10, 12, and undergraduate degree if applicable) — certified translations into German or English
  • APS certificate
  • University admission/enrollment letter
  • Blocked account confirmation (€11,208)
  • Health insurance certificate
  • Language certificate (if applicable)
  • Proof of accommodation in Germany (university hostel letter or private landlord contract)

Embassy appointment — what to expect

Book your appointment at the German Embassy or Consulate (VFS Global handles appointments in India for German visas). Bring all original documents plus 2 photocopies of each. The visa officer will conduct a brief interview about your study plans, financial situation, and ties to India. The embassy keeps your original passport for processing — this takes 6–12 weeks. A decision is sent via email.

The APS certificate is the single most important step — start it first, before anything else. Students who delay APS miss their admission deadlines and must defer by a full semester.
