Australia Student Visa Checklist 2026: Complete Documents Guide for Indian Students

Australia is the third most popular destination for Indian students, with over 130,000 Indian students enrolled in 2024. The Student Visa (subclass 500) is the gateway — and getting the documents right from the start significantly reduces processing delays and refusal risk. Here is the complete checklist for 2026.
Category 1 — Identity and education documents
- Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity beyond course end date)
- Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from your registered Australian institution
- Academic transcripts — Class 10, Class 12, and any undergraduate degree/diploma
- Certificates and mark sheets for all qualifications claimed
- IELTS/PTE/TOEFL score report meeting your institution's requirement
- English medium certificate from school/college (if applicable)
- Work experience letters and certificates (if relevant to your program)
Category 2 — Financial documents
- Bank statements for last 6 months showing sufficient funds (avoid sudden deposits)
- Fixed deposit certificates if applicable
- Education loan sanction letter from bank (if applicable)
- Scholarship letter from institution (if applicable)
- Sponsor's financial documents (if parents/guardian are funding) — their bank statements, IT returns, salary slips
- Proof of income of sponsor — salary certificate, business registration, property documents
Category 3 — Visa-specific requirements
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) — must be paid and certificate ready at time of application
- GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) statement — typically 500–1,000 words addressing study motivations, choice of Australia, and return plans
- AOP (Acceptance of Offer) letter from institution
- Proof of payment of initial tuition/enrolment deposit to the institution
- Photographs as per DIAC specifications (biometric photo uploaded online)
Category 4 — Health and character
- Health examination by a DIAC-approved Panel Physician (usually required — check your eMedical letter)
- Police clearance certificate from India (if required for your program/course duration)
- Declaration for character requirements
The GTE statement — the most important document
The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) assessment is the Australian visa officer's primary tool for evaluating whether you genuinely intend to study in Australia temporarily. Your GTE statement should address: your circumstances in India (family, property, future career), your study motivations, why this course at this institution in Australia, your course's relevance to your career goals in India, and your financial capacity. A weak, generic GTE is the single most common reason for Australia student visa refusal.
We review the GTE before every Australia visa application we process — it is the document that either opens the door or closes it, regardless of how strong everything else looks.
