The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is the single most valuable outcome of studying in Canada — an open work permit that turns your studies into Canadian work experience and, often, a pathway to permanent residence. Since November 1, 2024, two rules decide who qualifies: a field-of-study requirement for non-degree graduates, and a language requirement for everyone.
Getting these right before you enrol is critical, because the PGWP is a once-in-a-lifetime benefit — choosing the wrong institution or program can quietly cost you your eligibility.

The field-of-study requirement applies to non-degree graduates whose study permit was applied for on or after November 1, 2024. Language results must cover all four abilities and be valid when you apply.
IRCC can add or remove eligible fields of study at any time, and the list has already changed more than once. If you are a college or non-degree applicant, confirm your program's CIP code against the current eligible-fields list before you enrol — not after you graduate.
