New Zealand — English Alternatives

Study in New Zealand Without IELTS

PTE, TOEFL, Cambridge, MOI, Duolingo, or onshore NZCEL — New Zealand universities offer multiple routes to prove English proficiency. Discover which path fits your profile and let our experts handle the rest.

Accepted English Proof

IELTS Alternatives Accepted in New Zealand

New Zealand's institutions and Immigration New Zealand (INZ) recognise a broad range of English evidence. Here is what you can use instead of IELTS.

PTE Academic

Overall 50+

Pearson Test of English Academic is widely accepted across New Zealand universities and polytechnics. Fast results within 48 hours make it a preferred alternative to IELTS.

TOEFL iBT

79+ overall

The Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-Based Test is accepted by most New Zealand institutions, with some universities requiring a minimum of 90+ for postgraduate programmes.

Cambridge English

B2 First or higher

Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced, and C2 Proficiency certificates are recognised by New Zealand universities as proof of English proficiency.

Medium of Instruction (MOI)

From English-medium school/college

Indian students who completed Class 10, 12, or graduation from a recognised English-medium institution can submit an MOI certificate. Many NZ universities and private training establishments (PTEs) accept this.

Duolingo English Test

105+ (select institutions)

Some New Zealand pathways and foundation programmes accept the Duolingo English Test, particularly for diploma and certificate-level programmes.

NZCEL (Onshore)

Level 3–5

The New Zealand Certificate in English Language is an onshore pathway. Students can enrol in NZCEL and transition into their degree programme after completing the required level.

Important Note for Indian Students

INZ and university English requirements are independent. Even if your university waives IELTS via MOI, INZ may still require a formal test score or certified MOI for your student visa. Our team ensures your documentation satisfies both requirements before submission.
