Study in the Netherlands — MVV & Residence Permit for Indian Students
Everything Indian students need to know about the IND narging procedure, residence permit requirements, financial proof, DigiD registration, and the 1-year Orientation Year permit after graduation.
Key Facts About the Netherlands Student Visa
The Netherlands offers one of Europe's most student-friendly immigration pathways. Here's what makes it stand out for Indian applicants.
University Sponsors Your Permit
Recognised Dutch institutions apply to the IND on your behalf through the narging (sponsorship) procedure — meaning most Indian students do not need to visit a Dutch embassy for an MVV sticker.
No Separate MVV Required
If your institution is an IND-recognised sponsor, the MVV step is waived. You receive an authorisation code (machtigingscode), travel to the Netherlands, and complete biometrics locally.
€900/Month Financial Proof
The IND requires evidence of at least €900 per month to cover living costs. This can be demonstrated via bank statements, a scholarship letter, or a university guarantee.
1-Year Orientation Year After Degree
After graduating from a Dutch university, you can apply for the Zoekjaar (Orientation Year) permit — 12 months to find employment or launch a business without needing a separate work permit.
DigiD — Your Digital Identity
DigiD is the Dutch government's digital login system. After obtaining your BSN at the local gemeente, register for DigiD to access IND permit renewals, tax filings, and healthcare services.
IND Processing: 2–4 Weeks
Once the university submits your narging application and all documents are accepted, the IND typically decides within 2–4 weeks. Apply at least 5 months before your start date to avoid delays.
Document Requirements for Indian Students
Your university's International Student Services office will collect most of these documents. Prepare them well in advance to avoid processing delays.

Step-by-Step Process: Netherlands Residence Permit for Indian Students
Follow these steps in order. Future Link Consultants guides you through every stage — from university selection to DigiD registration.
Receive Unconditional Admission from a Dutch Institution
Secure an unconditional offer letter from an IND-recognised university, hogeschool, or MBO college in the Netherlands. Confirm your institution's recognised sponsor status with us before committing — this determines whether the narging procedure applies to you.
Submit Documents to International Student Services
Your institution's International Student Services (ISS) office will send you a checklist of required documents. Provide your passport copy, financial proof, photographs, TB test results, and any other requested materials promptly — typically 4–5 months before your programme start date.
Institution Submits Narging Application to IND
Your university submits the residence permit (verblijfsvergunning) application to the IND on your behalf. The IND assesses your application, usually within 2–4 weeks of receiving the complete file. You do not need to visit any embassy or consulate at this stage.
Receive Authorisation Code (Machtigingscode)
Once the IND approves your application, your institution forwards you an authorisation code (machtigingscode) along with a reference number. Keep this document safe — you will need it to collect your residence permit sticker / card after arrival.
Travel to the Netherlands
Book your flights and travel to the Netherlands. You may enter on your regular Indian passport using the authorisation code — no separate visa sticker in your passport is required for the journey if the narging procedure has been followed correctly.
Register at the Gemeente (BRP) and Get Your BSN
Within five days of arrival, register at your local municipality (gemeente) at the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP). You will receive a Burger Service Number (BSN) — the Dutch equivalent of a national ID number, essential for banking, healthcare, and tax purposes.
Attend IND Desk Appointment — Biometric Registration
Visit the IND desk appointment arranged by your institution (usually held on campus or nearby). Bring your passport, authorisation code, and passport photos. The IND officer will take your fingerprints and photograph, and your residence permit card (verblijfspas) will be mailed to you within two weeks.
Register for DigiD
Once you have your BSN, apply for a DigiD account at digid.nl. An activation letter is mailed to your registered address within 5 working days. DigiD is required for renewing your residence permit online, filing taxes, accessing your health insurer portal, and most Dutch government digital services.
Renew Residence Permit Annually (if Multi-Year Programme)
Residence permits are typically issued for 1 year at a time and must be renewed before expiry. Your institution will again sponsor the renewal through the IND. Ensure you maintain satisfactory academic progress (your institution monitors this as your sponsor) and keep your financial proof updated.
Apply for Orientation Year Permit After Graduation
Within 3 years of graduating from your Dutch programme, apply for the Zoekjaar (Orientation Year) permit. This grants 12 months to search for skilled employment or register a business. During this period you can work freely without a separate work permit (TWV). If you secure a job, your employer can then apply for a highly skilled migrant (kennismigrant) permit.
