Study in Japan as an Indian Student
A complete guide to Japan's student visa process — from Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) to MEXT scholarship, work rights, and life after graduation. Future Link Consultants helps you navigate every step.
What You Need for a Japan Student Visa
Japan's student visa process is institution-led. Your Japanese university or language school plays a central role. Here are the key requirements you must fulfil.
Certificate of Eligibility (CoE)
Your Japanese institution obtains the CoE from Japanese immigration on your behalf. This is the foundational document for your student visa application.
Proof of Financial Sufficiency
Bank statements, scholarship award letters, or sponsor affidavits demonstrating you can cover tuition and living expenses for your stay in Japan.
Academic Transcripts & Certificates
Certified copies of your 10th, 12th, and degree marksheets (where applicable), along with any Japanese language proficiency certificates such as JLPT.
Valid Passport
Passport with at least 6 months of validity beyond your planned stay, and blank pages for visa stamps. Ensure no discrepancies in name spelling across documents.
Study Plan (Rirekisho)
A detailed personal statement and study plan in the format accepted by your institution, outlining your academic goals, reasons for choosing Japan, and post-graduation plans.
Completed Visa Application Form
The official visa application form available from the Embassy of Japan in India, filled accurately. Errors or omissions can delay or derail your application.
Step-by-Step: Japan Student Visa Process for Indians
Understanding the end-to-end process helps you plan your timeline and avoid costly delays. Here is exactly what to expect.
Research & University Selection
Identify universities, graduate schools, or language institutions in Japan aligned with your academic goals and budget. Consider rankings, location, scholarship availability, and medium of instruction (Japanese vs. English-taught programmes).
Language Preparation
For Japanese-medium programmes, aim for JLPT N2 or higher. Many English-medium graduate programmes do not require Japanese, but basic Japanese proficiency significantly improves your experience and employability in Japan.
Apply to Your Institution
Submit your application directly to the university or language school. Required documents typically include academic records, statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, and language certificates. Admission decisions usually take 4–8 weeks.
Institution Applies for CoE
Once admitted, your Japanese institution submits a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) application to the Japanese Immigration Services Agency on your behalf. This process takes 1–3 months. You do not need to do anything during this phase — just stay in contact with your institution.
Receive CoE & Apply for Visa
After the CoE is issued, the institution mails it to you. With the CoE in hand, visit the Embassy of Japan or Japanese Consulate-General in your jurisdiction (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, or Osaka) to submit your visa application. Processing takes 5–7 business days.
Travel & Register in Japan
On arrival in Japan, pass through immigration with your CoE and visa. Register your address at your local municipal office within 14 days. Obtain your Residence Card (Zairyu Card), which you must carry at all times. Apply for work permission at the regional immigration bureau if you intend to work part-time.
