IELTS Band Requirements by Country
Typical scores for study and student visas, explained
How IELTS Requirements Actually Work
IELTS is one of the most widely accepted English tests for studying abroad, and most universities and immigration authorities set a required score. But the number you need is not one-size-fits-all โ it depends on the country, the institution, the level of study and even the specific course.
Two things matter: the overall band score (the average of your four sections) and the per-band minimum (the lowest score allowed in each of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking). Many students meet the overall score but fall short on one band, so understanding both is essential.
Typical IELTS Bands by Destination
| Country | Typical overall (undergrad/PG) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Canada | Around 6.0โ6.5 | Higher for some programs; per-band minimums common |
| UK | Around 6.0โ6.5 | Visa English rules apply for some courses |
| Australia | Around 6.0โ6.5 | Visa may set its own minimum band |
| USA | Around 6.0โ7.0 | Set by each university, varies widely |
| Ireland / NZ | Around 6.0โ6.5 | Program and level dependent |
These are broad, typical ranges only. Exact requirements vary by institution and program and change over time โ always confirm the current cut-off for your chosen course.
Overall Score vs Per-Band Minimums
A common mistake is focusing only on the overall band. Many universities and visa routes also require a minimum in each section โ for example, an overall 6.5 with no band below 6.0. Competitive or professional programs, such as nursing, teaching or medicine, often demand higher per-band scores.
If you are weaker in one skill, plan your preparation around lifting that band specifically, because a single low section can block an otherwise strong application even when your overall score looks fine.
Always check both the overall and per-band requirement for your exact program and visa route, and confirm whether the institution also accepts PTE or TOEFL. Requirements are updated regularly, so verify the current cut-offs on the official university and immigration pages before booking your test.
