Step-by-Step: How to Plan & Apply for Germany

From shortlisting universities to registering your address in Germany — here is the complete journey for Indian students.

01

Shortlist Universities & Programmes

Identify public German universities offering your target course. Check admission requirements, language of instruction (English or German), application deadlines (typically January–March for winter intake), and IELTS/TestDaF score requirements.

02

Prepare Academic Documents

Gather Class 10 & 12 marksheets, graduation transcripts, degree certificates, Statement of Purpose, Letters of Recommendation, and a CV. Documents must be translated into German by a certified translator if submitted in English is not specified.

03

Open Your Blocked Account

Open a Sperrkonto with providers like Fintiba, Expatrio, or Deutsche Bank. Deposit the mandatory €11,208 (2025-26 requirement). Obtain the certificate of the blocked account for your visa application.

04

Apply for Student Visa

Book a German consulate appointment (VFS Global in India). Submit your university admission letter, blocked account certificate, health insurance proof, accommodation confirmation, and financial documents. Visa processing takes 6–12 weeks.

05

Arrange Health Insurance & Accommodation

Enrol in statutory German health insurance (TK, AOK, or Barmer are popular) before or immediately upon arrival. Apply to student dormitories (Studentenwerk) early — waiting lists can be long. Private rentals are an alternative.

06

Arrive & Register (Anmeldung)

Within 14 days of arrival, register your address at the local Einwohnermeldeamt (residents' registration office). This is mandatory and required for opening a bank account, receiving your residence permit, and other official processes.
