Key Requirements

What You Need to Know Before You Apply

Germany's student visa process for Indian nationals has several unique requirements. Understanding these upfront saves time and prevents costly mistakes.

National Visa Type D

Germany issues a long-stay National Visa (Type D) for students enrolling in recognised universities for programmes longer than 90 days.

APS Certificate

Indian applicants must obtain the APS Deutschland certificate (₹18,000 fee) to verify academic credentials before applying to German universities.

Blocked Account — €11,208/yr

You must open a blocked account (Sperrkonto) with at least €11,208 to demonstrate sufficient funds for one academic year in Germany.

120 Days Work Per Year

Students may work 120 full days or 240 half-days per year alongside their studies without requiring an additional work permit.

18-Month Job-Seeker Visa

After graduating, you can apply for an 18-month job-seeker visa (Aufenthaltserlaubnis zur Arbeitssuche) to find employment in Germany.

Embassy Appointment

Appointments must be booked at the German Embassy or Consulate in India. Slots are limited — plan at least 4–6 months before your intended start date.

Application Process

Step-by-Step: Germany Student Visa for Indians

Follow these eight steps in order. Missing or sequencing steps incorrectly is the most common reason for delays.

01

Obtain APS Certificate

Submit your Class 10, 12, and bachelor's degree transcripts to APS Deutschland India. Pay the ₹18,000 fee, attend a personal interview if required, and receive your APS certificate — mandatory for all Indian applicants.

02

Secure University Admission

Apply to your chosen German university or Studienkolleg. Collect your official letter of admission (Zulassungsbescheid), which is a core visa document.

03

Open a Blocked Account

Open a Sperrkonto (blocked account) with a recognised provider such as Deutsche Bank, Coracle, or Expatrio. Deposit at least €11,208 to meet the financial proof requirement.

04

Get Health Insurance

Arrange travel health insurance valid for Germany covering a minimum of €30,000. German public health insurance (GKV) is mandatory once you enrol — obtain travel cover for the visa period first.

05

Book Embassy Appointment

Schedule your appointment at the German Embassy (New Delhi) or Consulate (Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata). Appointment slots fill quickly — book well in advance via the official portal.

06

Compile & Submit Documents

Prepare your complete document set — passport, APS certificate, admission letter, blocked account proof, insurance, language certificates, and visa application forms — and attend your appointment.

07

Visa Processing & Collection

Processing typically takes 6–12 weeks. Once approved, collect your passport with the National Visa D affixed. You can then book flights and prepare for your move to Germany.

08

Register on Arrival & Enrol

Upon arrival, register at the local Einwohnermeldeamt (residents' registration office) within 14 days. Enrol at your university and apply for a residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis) at the Ausländerbehörde.

Costs & Timeline

Budget & Time Planning for Germany

Germany offers tuition-free public university education for international students (you pay only a nominal semester administration fee). However, you must prove you can support your living costs. Plan your finances well in advance.

  • University Admission: 2–6 months
  • Blocked Account Setup: 1–2 weeks
  • Embassy Appointment Wait: 4–10 weeks
