How Much Money Do You Need to Study in the UK?
Proof of funds is one of the biggest reasons UK study visas get delayed or refused. Here's what you need to show โ and how to show it right.
It isn't only how much โ it's how you show it
For a UK student visa you need to show you can cover your first year of tuition plus living costs for a set period. Many applications run into trouble not because the money isn't there, but because of how it is held and documented โ the wrong account holder, too short a holding period, or a large deposit with no explanation.
Watch the short above, then go through what the requirement covers and the mistakes to avoid.
What the requirement covers
First-year tuition
The course fees for your first year, less anything you have already paid or had waived, as shown on your CAS.
Maintenance funds
Living costs for a set number of months. The monthly rate differs depending on where in the UK you will study.
A continuous holding period
The money must sit in the account for an unbroken period before you apply, commonly 28 days, ending shortly before the application.
Documents in an accepted form
Bank statements or an official financial document in the right name, showing the balance clearly across the whole period.
Maintenance amounts, the holding period and the list of accepted documents are set by UK immigration and are updated regularly โ always confirm the current official requirements and figures for your course and location before you apply.
How to document your funds properly
Plan the holding period backwards from when you intend to apply, so the money is in place well before the deadline rather than at the last moment. Keep the balance from dipping below the required amount at any point. If a large sum arrives from a family member or a loan, be ready to explain and evidence where it came from โ an unexplained deposit invites exactly the scrutiny you want to avoid.
We help you understand the current requirement and prepare clear, correctly-documented proof of funds as part of a complete, honest application. We never fabricate financial documents.
