When and Why to Extend Your Study Permit

A study permit is issued for a set period, usually tied to the length of your program plus a short buffer. If your studies take longer than expected, you change programs, or you move to a higher level of study, you may need to extend before the permit expires.

Timing is everything. IRCC generally advises applying at least 30 days before your current permit expires, and applying online. Applying early protects your ability to keep studying while a decision is pending.

Maintained Status โ€” Keep Studying While You Wait

If you apply to extend your study permit before it expires, you benefit from maintained status (formerly called implied status). This means you can continue studying under the same conditions until IRCC makes a decision, even if your original permit lapses in the meantime.

This protection only applies if your extension application is submitted before the current permit expires. Apply even one day late and you lose maintained status and may have to stop studying and restore your status.

Maintained status ends the moment IRCC refuses your application. If refused, you must stop studying and consider restoration within the allowed window โ€” do not assume you can keep attending classes.
