What the Canada Spouse Visa Really Means

Proving a Genuine Relationship
IRCC assesses whether your relationship is real and not primarily for immigration. Strong applications include marriage or common-law evidence, photographs across time, chat and call history, proof of visits, joint finances or shared responsibilities, and letters from family who know the couple.
The spouse open work permit lets an eligible spouse work in Canada while the application is processed. Note that from 2025 the government tightened who qualifies for open work permits — for example, spouses of international students are now generally limited to spouses of master's, doctoral, and certain select-program students. Eligibility rules shift, so verify what applies to your situation.
Never submit exaggerated, borrowed, or fabricated relationship evidence. A misrepresentation finding can lead to refusal and a multi-year ban from Canada. Honest, well-organised proof of a real relationship is always the stronger strategy.
