USA F-1 student visa guide for Indian students 2026

The United States hosts more international students than any other country — with nearly 1.1 million enrolled across hundreds of universities and colleges. The F-1 student visa process is well-established but document-intensive. Here is the complete 2026 roadmap for Indian students.
Step 1 — University admission and I-20
Before you can apply for an F-1 visa, you need: (1) admission from a SEVP-certified US institution; (2) an I-20 form (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status) from that institution. The I-20 is generated after you confirm acceptance and demonstrate financial capacity to cover tuition plus living costs.
Step 2 — SEVIS fee and DS-160
- Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 at fmjfee.com
- Complete the DS-160 Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application on the State Department portal
- Schedule your visa interview at the US Consulate in Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kolkata
- Appointment wait times vary — book 3–6 months before your intended start date
Step 3 — Visa interview
The F-1 interview is typically brief (2–5 minutes) and focuses on your course of study, why you chose this university, your funding source, and your ties to India (intent to return). Officers are looking for genuine academic intent and demonstrated financial capacity. Our counsellors conduct mock interviews to prepare you for the most common questions.
OPT and STEM OPT extension
Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F-1 students to work in the US for 12 months after graduation in a role related to their field of study. STEM graduates (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) can apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving a total of 36 months of work authorisation. This is the critical window for H-1B sponsorship.
- OPT: 12 months of post-graduation work authorisation for all F-1 graduates
- STEM OPT Extension: additional 24 months for STEM degree holders (36 months total)
- No employer sponsorship needed during OPT period
- H-1B lottery must be entered by March each year for an October start
- CPT (Curricular Practical Training) also available during study for qualified programs
The US F-1 to OPT to H-1B path remains the most competitive route into Silicon Valley and top global tech companies — worth the effort for the right candidate.
