PTE vs IELTS for Canada: Which is Better for Indian Students in 2026?

Both PTE Academic and IELTS Academic are accepted by Canadian universities and by IRCC for study permit applications. But they are very different tests — and for Indian students, the right choice can save months and money.
PTE vs IELTS: Quick comparison
IELTS is graded by human examiners (for speaking and writing). PTE is 100% computer-graded. The speaking section in PTE is done into a microphone with no interviewer, which many Indian students find less stressful. PTE results arrive in 2–5 business days; IELTS takes up to 13 days.
Score equivalents: PTE to IELTS
- PTE 50 ≈ IELTS 6.0
- PTE 58 ≈ IELTS 6.5
- PTE 65 ≈ IELTS 7.0
- PTE 79 ≈ IELTS 8.0
- Most Canadian universities require PTE 58 (≈ IELTS 6.5) for graduate programs
Cost comparison
- IELTS Academic: ₹17,000–₹17,700 per attempt
- PTE Academic: ₹15,900 per attempt
- PTE Score Send: free for up to 3 institutions; IELTS charges per score send
- PTE re-takes are cheaper if you need to improve one section
Which is easier for Indian students?
This is highly individual. Engineering and science graduates with strong reading and listening skills often score better on PTE because its AI grading rewards technical accuracy. Students with strong conversational English may prefer IELTS where a human examiner can give credit for fluency. Future Link recommends taking a free practice test for both before deciding.
Does Canada (IRCC) prefer PTE or IELTS?
IRCC accepts both equally. The deciding factor is always your target university's admission requirement — if your university accepts PTE 58, IRCC will accept the same score for the study permit. There is no separate IRCC preference for one test over the other.
We guide students to the right test based on their academic background, available preparation time, and target score — not just the cheapest option.
