Study in New Zealand 2026: visa, costs and PR pathway for Indian students

New Zealand may be geographically remote, but it consistently ranks among the world's top study destinations for quality of life, safety, and education outcomes. All eight of its universities rank in the world's top 3% — and graduates of Master's and PhD programs receive a three-year open work visa to find employment.

Why New Zealand?

  • All 8 universities in the world's top 3% — globally recognised degrees
  • Safe, peaceful country — consistently top 5 in the Global Peace Index
  • 3-year post-study open work visa for Master's and PhD graduates
  • Spouse/partner gets an open work visa while you study
  • Skilled Migrant Category offers a pathway to New Zealand permanent residence
  • English-medium teaching — no language barrier for Indian students

NZ Student Visa requirements

  • Acceptance from a New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA)-accredited institution
  • English proficiency: IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall for most programs
  • Funds evidence: NZD 15,000 per year for living costs + tuition fees
  • Medical certificates and character documents
  • Return travel evidence (shows intent to return — not required but advisable)

Post-study work visa

New Zealand's Post Study Work visa lets you stay and work in NZ after graduation. Duration depends on your qualification level and where you studied. A Master's graduate from a New Zealand university gets a 3-year open work visa — the most generous post-study scheme of any destination for master's level. Regional study adds extra points toward the Skilled Migrant Category.

Cost of studying in New Zealand

  • Tuition: NZD 22,000–32,000 per year for most programs
  • Living costs: NZD 15,000–20,000 per year (Auckland is most expensive)
  • Part-time work: up to 20 hours per week during study
  • Average student part-time earnings: NZD 300–600 per month

New Zealand is often overlooked because it's geographically distant — which means less competition for the same world-class degrees and the same PR pathway, with a much higher quality of life.
