IELTS score requirements for Canada, UK, Australia & Germany in 2026

Your IELTS score can be the single most important factor in whether your study abroad application succeeds — and how many scholarships you qualify for. Here are the exact requirements for 2026 across the four destinations where Future Link places the most students.

Canada — student visa and university

• Canadian student visa (IRCC): no minimum score requirement, but the institution requires it
• Most undergraduate programs: IELTS 6.0–6.5 overall (no band below 6.0)
• Most postgraduate programs: IELTS 6.5–7.0 overall
• Top universities (UBC, UToronto, McGill): often require 7.0+ with no band below 6.5
• PTE and TOEFL iBT are widely accepted as alternatives

United Kingdom — student visa and Russell Group

• UK Student Visa (Home Office approved SELT): IELTS for UKVI minimum varies by school
• Undergraduate programs: typically IELTS 6.0–6.5
• Postgraduate programs: typically IELTS 6.5–7.0
• Russell Group universities (Oxford, Cambridge, LSE): 7.0–7.5 with all bands above 6.5
• MBA programs: often require 7.0 overall with writing band 6.5+

Australia — Subclass 500 visa

• ELICOS (language courses): IELTS 4.5 overall
• Vocational / diploma courses: typically 5.5 overall
• Bachelor's programs: 6.0–6.5 overall
• Master's programs: 6.5 overall minimum; competitive programs may require 7.0
• Medical and nursing programs: 7.0 overall with all bands minimum 7.0

Germany — student visa and university

• For English-taught master's: IELTS 6.0–7.0 depending on the university
• For visa application: no specific IELTS requirement from the German Consulate, but universities set their own minimums
• TU Munich, RWTH Aachen: generally 6.5–7.0 overall
• German language requirement (for German-taught programs): DSH 2 or TestDaF 4 equivalent
