Canada Study Permit Requirements for Indian Students (2025)
Future Link Study Abroad Desk December 15, 2025 8 min

Canada remains the top destination for Indian students. In 2025, the application process has several new requirements. Here is exactly what you need to apply for a Canadian study permit from India.
Key documents required
- Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
- Valid passport with at least 6 months beyond your intended stay
- Proof of financial support — tuition fees + living expenses (~CAD $20,635/year)
- IELTS Academic (most programs require 6.0–6.5 overall)
- Statement of Purpose (Letter of Explanation) — strongly recommended
- Biometrics — required for all Indian citizens
- Upfront medical exam — mandatory, complete before submitting application
- Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) — required for most programs since 2024
Student Direct Stream (SDS) — faster processing
Indian students can use SDS for faster processing (~20 days vs. 8+ weeks). SDS requires IELTS 6.0 in all bands, a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD $20,635, and upfront payment of first-year tuition.
What changed in 2024–2025
- Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) now required for most college/university applicants
- Master's and PhD students are exempt from PAL requirement
- New income requirement for GIC — increased to CAD $20,635 from $10,000
- IRCC has reduced study permit allocations — earlier applications increase your chances
The biggest mistakes on Canada study permit applications are weak SOPs and inconsistent financial documents. An RCIC-authorized review before submission makes a measurable difference.
