Canada PGWP Changes 2026: What Indian Students Must Know

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is one of the most powerful immigration tools for Indian students in Canada. After graduating from an eligible Designated Learning Institution (DLI), you can get an open work permit for up to 3 years — and this Canadian work experience is the key to Express Entry PR.

PGWP eligibility — what changed in 2024-2025

  • Programs must be at a DLI with a PGWP-eligible status (not all DLIs qualify — check before enrolling)
  • The program must be at least 8 months long (reduced from earlier requirements)
  • Language requirement added: IELTS 7.0 / TOEFL 101 / PTE 65 (CLB 7) for university degrees; IELTS 6.0 / PTE 50 (CLB 5) for college diplomas
  • Field-of-study restrictions: college PGWP applicants must be in STEM, healthcare, trades, or agriculture fields from November 2024 onwards

PGWP duration — how long do you get?

  • Program 8 months to less than 2 years: PGWP matches the program length
  • Program 2 years or longer: PGWP is valid for 3 years
  • PhD graduates: may be eligible for a 3-year PGWP regardless of program length
  • Multiple programs: combined PGWP can be calculated if both programs are eligible

PGWP to PR: the fastest route

The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) stream in Express Entry is designed for PGWP holders. With 1 year of Canadian skilled work experience (NOC TEER 0/1/2/3), you can apply for PR directly through Express Entry. CEC draws in 2025–2026 have been at high CRS scores — but category-based draws for specific NOC codes happen regularly and can invite at lower scores.

Which programs should I choose for the best PGWP outcome?

  • University degrees (Bachelor's, Master's) at DLIs: 3-year PGWP if 2+ years
  • College diplomas in STEM, healthcare, trades: eligible under new field restrictions
  • MBA programs at accredited business schools: eligible with CLB 7 English
  • Short courses under 8 months: NOT eligible for PGWP
  • Always verify PGWP eligibility on the DLI's IRCC listing before paying your deposit

Choosing the wrong program at a college that is no longer PGWP-eligible is one of the most costly mistakes an Indian student can make. We verify DLI status and field-of-study restrictions before any application goes out.
