Canada PGWP 2026: who qualifies, how long it lasts, and what comes next

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is Canada's most powerful bridge between study and permanent residency. Issued for up to three years, it allows graduates to work for any employer, gain Canadian Experience Class (CEC) eligibility, and qualify for Express Entry — all without employer sponsorship.
Who is eligible for PGWP?
Not every study program or institution qualifies. IRCC made significant changes in late 2024 that affected thousands of private college students. Here is what you need to know.
- Must have graduated from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) with PGWP eligibility
- Public colleges and universities are generally eligible; private institutions must be listed
- Program must be at least 8 months in duration
- Must apply within 180 days of receiving your final marks transcript
- Cannot have previously held a PGWP
How long is the PGWP valid?
The PGWP duration mirrors the length of your study program, capped at three years. A one-year certificate leads to a one-year PGWP; a two-year diploma leads to a two-year PGWP; any program of three years or more leads to a three-year PGWP. Master's programs of at least one year now receive a three-year PGWP regardless of program length — a significant policy change.
Converting PGWP to Canadian PR
With a PGWP, working in a skilled occupation (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3) for at least one year qualifies you for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) — the most reliable Express Entry pathway for international graduates. CEC draws are typically more frequent and at lower CRS cut-offs than Federal Skilled Worker draws.
A student who chooses a PGWP-eligible program and secures skilled employment within six months of graduating has a near-certain path to Canadian PR within three years of landing.
Choosing the right program from the start
Program selection matters enormously for PGWP strategy. Private colleges that lost PGWP eligibility in 2024 affected thousands of students mid-degree. Work with an RCIC-authorized consultant before choosing your institution to confirm current eligibility status.
