How it works

How the overall IELTS band is calculated

Your overall band is the average of your four module bands, rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. For example, 6.5, 6.5, 5.0 and 7.0 average 6.25, which gives an overall band of 6.5.

Listening and Reading bands come from the number of correct answers out of 40. Writing and Speaking are marked by examiners against four criteria each, so enter the band you expect or the band a trainer gave you.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many correct answers do I need for band 7?

As a guide: 30 out of 40 in Listening, 30 in Academic Reading, or 34 in General Training Reading. The exact conversion can vary slightly between test versions.

Is this calculator official?

No. It uses the raw-score conversion IELTS publishes as a guide and the standard rounding rule. Only an official IELTS Test Report Form gives your real scores.

Why does General Training Reading need more correct answers?

General Training reading texts are more everyday than Academic ones, so IELTS converts raw scores to bands more strictly to keep the bands comparable.
