Step 1
University & College Selection
Choose the right institution — this decision affects your PGWP eligibility

What to Look for in an Institution

  • DLI Status (Designated Learning Institution) RequiredOnly DLI-approved institutions can enrol international students. Check the IRCC DLI list before applying.
  • PGWP-Eligible Program CriticalOnly programs at public colleges and universities, or certain private institutions, qualify for PGWP after graduation.
  • Program-Occupation AlignmentChoose programs with clear career pathways in Canada. Use NOC codes to verify your future occupation's demand.
  • Co-op / Internship OpportunitiesCo-op programs allow paid work experience during studies. This helps with CRS points later for Express Entry.
  • City & Cost of LivingToronto and Vancouver = high cost. Winnipeg, Halifax, Regina = significantly more affordable. Factor this into your budget.
  • Acceptance Rate & RequirementsEnsure your academic profile (grades, English scores) meets the institution's minimum entry requirements.

Top PGWP-Eligible Programs (In-Demand)

PGWP Length = Program Length

A 2-year program = 2-year PGWP. A 4-year degree = 3-year PGWP (maximum). This open work permit lets you work anywhere in Canada after graduation.

⚠️
Know the Risks
Common Refusal Reasons & How to Avoid Them
Understanding these can save your application from rejection
Insufficient Ties to Home Country

IRCC is not convinced you will return after studies. Fix: Include strong evidence of family, property, job offers, or business ownership in India in your SOP.

Weak or Generic SOP

A copy-pasted, vague SOP raises suspicion. Fix: Write a specific, researched, personal SOP that answers why this exact program at this exact institution.

Insufficient Financial Proof

Sudden large deposits before the statement period are red flags. Fix: Show consistent balances over 6 months. Use GIC for living expenses.

Program Not Matching Academic Background

Applying for engineering when you studied arts without a bridging explanation. Fix: Address this transition clearly in your SOP with logical career reasoning.

Previous Visa Refusals Not Disclosed

Hiding refusals is misrepresentation — a far more serious ground for denial. Fix: Always disclose previous refusals and provide an explanation.
