The CRS is a points-based ranking system used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to rank candidates in the Express Entry pool. Candidates with the highest CRS scores receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence in regular draws.

Going from CLB 7 to CLB 9 in all four abilities can add 52 points to your score. Even improving one skill (e.g. Writing from 6 to 8) adds meaningful points.
French-language skills add +15 to +50 points directly. French bilingual draws (separate pool) have significantly lower CRS cut-offs β often 50β100 points lower than general draws.
A provincial nomination through a PNP program instantly adds 600 points to your CRS β effectively guaranteeing an ITA in the next draw. This is the single most powerful boost available.
A qualifying job offer from a Canadian employer adds 50 points (NOC TEER 1) or 200 points (NOC TEER 0 senior manager roles). LMIA-exempt offers (ICT, CUSMA) also qualify.
Graduating from a Canadian 1-year program adds 15 points; a 2+ year program adds 30 points. This also helps with skill transferability and CEC eligibility through a work permit.
Foreign work experience combined with strong language scores (CLB 7+) adds skill transferability points. 3+ years foreign experience + CLB 9 = 50 bonus skill transferability points.
If your spouse has strong language scores (CLB 5+) and/or a Canadian degree, including them as a co-applicant can add up to 40 spouse points. Compare both scenarios before submitting.
If you have a brother or sister who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you receive an automatic 15-point bonus under additional factors.
If you hold a Bachelor's degree, adding a Canadian Master's or a postgraduate certificate from a recognized DLI upgrades your education score. PhD holders score maximum education points.
IRCC runs category-based draws targeting specific occupations (healthcare, STEM, trades, agriculture, transport). If your NOC code matches a targeted category, you may receive an ITA even with a lower CRS score.
Canada has a constitutional commitment to bilingualism. To encourage French speakers, IRCC offers:
TEF Canada β Test d'Γ©valuation de franΓ§ais
TCF Canada β Test de connaissance du franΓ§ais
Both test Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. Minimum NCLC 7 recommended to maximize benefits.
Beginner β NCLC 5: ~6 months
NCLC 5 β NCLC 7: ~6β8 more months
Apps like Duolingo + Alliance FranΓ§aise coaching can achieve NCLC 7 in 12β18 months of consistent study.
Each province has its own Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). If a province nominates you for permanent residency, IRCC awards you 600 additional CRS points β virtually guaranteeing an ITA in the next draw.
